Hello everyone. Recently I purchased Icewind Dale 2, which I renember playin years ago from the big D&D collection box with all BGs and IWDs.
I'm normally a guy who likes to center around less characters on RPGs, or making the main character and having companions, so I wanted to ask some more experienced people about how posible it is to solo or duo the game without making OP characters (ye old Palladin 1 /Sorcerer X and so on).

Is it manageable at all? if not, what it's the minimum you would recomend for not being torturing yourself with normal characters. Thank you.

While you don't have to take a full 6-man party, the game was definitely not designed to be solo or duo friendly. Many of the encounters were designed with the expectation that you'll have multiple party members who can split their attention between several foes and/or assist an incapacitated party member.

If you're very familiar with Infinity Engine games, you could probably manage with 4 or 5 well-built characters. I've heard of some people soloing the game, but you really need to know what you're doing, be very familiar with each encounter so you can prepare the appropriate defenses ahead of time, min/max to the extreme, and take advantage of cheese tactics and exploits whenever possible.
The game gets considerably more difficult with smaller parties since higher level characters get less combat XP so small parties don't level much faster and get 0 XP for fighting quite often.

Soloing is doable nevertheless, any class works. Pure class cleric and pure class sorcerer are the best options followed by pure druid. A duo consisting of cleric and sorcerer will have more options available.

Be aware that stats do matter, items only add to the values and don't set to fixed numbers, the casting stat and the physical stats are far more important than the remaining two mental stats which can be dumped to the minimum.
So I get it is much better if I try, let's say, a typical 4 member party if I'm not seeking for a crunchy challenge.

Some other advice?.

A character with Wilderness Lore skill is very much needed when you get to a certain forest later in the game. You need it to navigate a maze-like forest. A Paladin is also very helpful because him\her being able to detect evil comes into play in quite a few conversations in the game.

Alchemy is also needed at one point later in the game.

If you are going for a 4 man party I guess Paladin, Cleric, Druid and Wizard covers all the bases. The Wizard having Int as his main stat gets a lot of skillpoints and you can use cross-class points to just get him some OK disarm trap + other thief skills to compensate for a lack of a full blown thief.
