Where do you put custom portraits for icewind dale 2? ICewind dale: EE had a really simple document folder that you could just dump portraits with the naming convention into.

Also, does anyone have any good folders of custom portraits? I can't afford photoshop and the windows picture editor for windows 10 doesn't seem to allow me to resize images.
You can download a free image editor called GIMP here. Just be aware that during the install wizard, you will probably want to do a custom install so you don't get all the bundled adware. Other than that, once it is installed there are no gimmicks and it is a very good program that can do 90% of what Photoshop can do.

I don't have IWD2 installed atm, so I can't tell you exactly. But the info on how to do it is in the README text file in the game folder containing IWD2. It's pretty easy. You basically need to save a small icon and a larger Picture in BMP format in a new folder called "Characters" that you create in your game folder. Follow the instructions found in the README for image size and filename. Then start the game and follow the UI to get to the character customization screen. If you followed the instructions correctly, your new images will appear as one of the choices.

There's already a file that says "Characters" and it's already got a bunch of RES and CHR files on it.

Well, follow the instructions given in the readme. I thought I remembered having to create a new folder for the new portraits. As I said, I don't have the game installed so I can't check my game folder to tell you where they should go.

If the bitmap portrait s are in the right folder with the right name, they will show up in the UI character customization screen. Even if they are the wrong size, they won't be framed properly but they should still work.

I just read p27 in the IWD1 pdf manual with instructions for adding custom portraits for IWD1. The process is the same for IWD2. You need to create a new folder called "Portraits" and save your new portrait bitmaps in there. The portrait sizes are bigger for IWD2 though, so you can't just use the same ones from IWD1.

The IWD2 readme has instructions for image size, filename, and color mode (8-bit and 24-bit color iirc). GIMP can do all that. If you use the wrong color mode, the wrong filename or put them in the wrong folder, the images won't display at all in the game's UI. If you use the wrong size, they will display, but they won't be framed properly.

If Gimp is too complex for you, you can always try Paint.net . It is an amazing light program which can do most of the basic things. And it is incredibly easy to use. I have all Photoshop and Gimp but I mostly use Paint.net since it is much faster and easier.
