near the beginning of the game i encountered a monster where i would attack him and when he was low on hp turned into a puddle on the ground. i keep attacking him then he raises up and attacks me again and repeat and repeat. i can't seem to kill him. I think he is called a troll but i'm not too sure. any help would be appreciated.

Once he is down on the ground, use some form of fire or acid on him and he'll die. Weapons with fire or acid work, as well as spells. Melf's Acid Arrow is particularly good for this purpose.

Invest in a Troll Killer sword from Conlan in Kuldahar! Only much later when I had kills all trolls in the game already, I did find a sword with fire-acid damage on it lol.

The druid spell Flameblade is also great for killing several trolls. Fire and acid arrows work great too. Burning hands, fireball and many other spells that cause fire or acid damage. There are bottles of some kind of flaming fluid (I forgot the name) which are designed to kill trolls. You will find a couple of those before you face your first trolls iirc.

The easiest way to solve this problem is just to keep a couple of acid arrow spells ready for your mage to cast. Have him toss those around as soon as the troll goes down and you're done.

Keeping some firey or acids ranged weapons around will work as well.
