Schvinger: I have windows 7 he has windows xp how do I set this up step by step instructions please and explain it to me in a way I can understan even if you have to explain it to me like I am an idiot Thanks.
Okay, so I don't currently have a working copy of Icewind Dale, and much of what I'm telling you is taken from Icewind Dale II.
If
this picture from Icewind Dale II is anything to go by, you want to click on where it says "single player" underneath the "game mode" header, and then select "TCPIP". After that, you can either host a game or join a game: If you host a game, you will need to name the session, provide a player name to identify you, and optionally provide a password for the session; if you join a game, you will need to input the IP address of the host - after you do that, you should both be seeing the same screen, which is a character arbitration window. Make characters and assign who is controlling which characters, after that you should be able to play.
Here are some things you'll need to know:
* Use windowed mode. You're unlikely to get multiplayer to work otherwise. You can use Alt+E to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. Once you've started the session and are playing, you can use Alt+E to enter fullscreen mode, but you'll need to be in windowed mode to begin with.
* I advise using
Hamachi, which creates a virtual local area network (LAN), and generally takes a whole lot of fuss out of things, and will give you a fake IP that you can use. If you need instructions, I'll be happy to write some up for you. If you cannot manage to connect using Hamachi, I recommend downloading the 1.0.1.5 version and not updating it, as this version tends to work much better for older games.
* Make sure you both have the same version of the game. If you're both using the GOG version unmodified, you should have the same version. On the same note, I advise that you both are using the same version of Hamachi.
* You both need to have the same frame rate. I advise 40, though this may make cutscenes a bit funny. Additionally, you both need to be on the same difficulty setting (this should be normal by default). To ensure that multiplayer works, I recommend you have the settings on each game be the same. You can find these options in the game's Config application, which can be found in the install directory for the game. If you don't know where the install directory is, well...my install directory is "E:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Icewind Dale II"; your pathway should look similar, though your drive is probably not E:, and your Program Files folder might not have (x86) in it.
* Note that if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you'll need to tell Windows Firewall that Icewind Dale is safe. Otherwise, the game will freeze when it tries to access the Internet - if you don't know how to tell Windows Firewall which programs are safe, it would probably be a good idea for you to disable Windows Firewall before attempting to play.
Remember to reactivate your firewall after you are done playing. I hope this is helpful. If you need any more help, or I haven't explained something well enough, please feel free to ask.
