Assuming your asking about IWD instead of IDW2 here is my advice.

The game insures you have the min for each class so you don't have to worry about that.

Strength is best for Warrior classes (Fighter, Paladin, Ranger) only they can get an 18 xx% rating every other class maxs at 18. At 16 you get +1 Damage, 17 is +1 to Hit +1 Damage and 18 is +1 to hit +3 Damage, the xx% have a bunch more 5(?) steps adding bonuses to hit and damage. Strength also governs how much you can carry much under 12 and your character can't wear decent armor, carry a sheild and have a weapon.

Dexterity is everyones friend. Rouges get bonuses to there theif abilities but everyone can go up to an 18 and get -4 to their AC, +4 to hit with bows and crossbows and go earlier in the round (hard to tell the way it works in the game high dex characters can screw up spellcasters better than low dex ones).

Constitution is related to hit points a really low score subracts from every hit die you get and adversely affects some saves, 15+ gives bonus Hit Points every level, everyone gets +1 for a 15 and +2 for a 16, warriors get +3 for a 17 and +4 for an 18 everyone else still only gets 2.

Intelligence is the highest spell level your mage can cast, how easy it is learn new spells and the maximum number of spells per spell level that can be in the mages book, also applied to Bards though they only go up to level 7 spells (I think so 16 is good) I don't know what effect it has in game as I don't pick my moron characters to talk to NPC's.

Wisdom is for Clerics and Druids it determines the highest spell level they can cast and gives bonus spells to the caster also below a 12 (?) you run the risk of failing to cast the spell. Be careful of going to low on this as you get penalties on saves vs the most annoying of the spells charm person and the like.

Charisma is very important for your lead character you get charged less at stores for an 18 for sure maybe for slightly lower as well but I always have a paladin so 1 character is always at least a 17. It may also effect how NPC's treat you as well, I know in Baldur's Gate TOS it had this effect.
There's no best build for most classes, a lot of depends on party size, difficulty level (how fast will you get how many XP ?), the other party members and your playing style.

In general strength, dex and con should be maxed (16 con is enough for characters without warrior levels), int (except for mages and bards which should have 18+), wis (grants a few unimportant low level bonus spells only for cleric and druid) and cha (one character can have it high for dialogue and shop prices) are quite useless an can be dumped to the minimum.

You can find character creation advice at

, although none of the guides is really good when it comes to character creation.

If you post which party composition you have in mind we'll give specific advice for optimizing.
