too the point that the game is almost unplayable. For example entangle and unholy bright virtually killed the game.

Win7, Quad-core (Toshibo satellite)
Actually encountered this problem since many years ago when I played on older machines.

Are you using the GOG version & WineD3D's DDraw Library?
