Man, I'm really bummed here. I've made it all the way to the 3rd floor of Severed Hand with no problems but now the game keeps randomly crashing around the elevator in the southeast corner (close to the serrated skeleton).

I decided to just avoid that area and move on, so I've cleared every floor and every tower completely but I am missing one part of the machine, which is apparently down that accursed elevator so I HAVE to go there. Of course, going down the elevator makes the game crash every time.

What's weird is that making the game pause on encountering enemies allows the elevator transition to load but as soon as I start moving in the next area, I get the crash. I'm extremely upset because I thought I was finally going to finish the game (and I do want to get the full experience) but now I can't, after having put in so many hours (I imagine I'm not too far from the end either).

Any help would be appreciated. I have Win 7 and I've tried compatibility modes and resolutions.
If there is no other solution, you can always use cheat codes to get the last machine piece and continue. Hopefully though, someone can help you with the technical problem so you don't have to go that route.

Thanks bjbrown, any idea how i could do that?

For the cheats, follow the instructions in Dan Simpson's Walkthrough in the Cheats section.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/256221-icewind-dale/faqs/8166

Since the GoG game should be fully patched, skip the section on patching it. Add the line in icewind.ini under the [Game Options] section:

Cheats=1

In-game, press [Ctrl] + [Tab] to get the console window.

In the console window, type:

CHEATERSDOPROSPER:CreateItem("PIECE1")

If you need the first piece, I don't know which piece you need, it's PIECE1, PIECE2, PIECE3, PIECE4.

I would also read though the Walkthrough on the Severed Hand to see you are missing anything else important by skipping the area.

I am not very technically knowledgeable and cannot think of anything to suggest regarding fixing the technical problem. It could be a problem with any mods you are using, if you are using any mods. It could maybe be a corrupt file, something missing from or damaged in the Override folder.

There is actually quite a bit of game left to play after Severed Hand.

Thanks a lot bjbrown. I hate to use cheats for this playthrough, as it takes me out of it somewhat, but it looks like I have no choice here. This does allow me to continue on. I appreciate your help.
