That's the thing, with a party of 6 I DO find that they get in the way of some things. It's mostly annoyes me controlling 6 characters at the same time so I'll switch 'back' to 4 instead.
bevinator: I generally find games designed for 6 characters to be most enjoyable with either 3 or 4, depending on the game. With more than that, you get more killing power (sometimes) but just as often you get extra characters that get in the way more than anything. With 4 characters rather than 6, you get a whopping 50% extra experience, per character. It makes a huge difference, though in the final stages of the game it can get a little harder if everyone hits the level cap.
In IWD2 it's a little trickier, since XP is scaled down the higher your level, and spawn points make extra monsters the higher your level. This can make the game harder without making it much more rewarding in terms of XP or loot, but it can be more rewarding just for the extra awesome of your characters. If you're planning on making a small-party or solo run through IWD2, I'd suggest finding a mod for MONCRATE.2DA, which is the file that controls the (rather bizarre) system for reducing XP gains for monsters depending on your level.
