I'm going to start with IW1 but after seeing some gameplay movies on Youtube from people who have only 3 or 4 characters in their teams I wondered... When I defeat an enemy and I get 100 exp points from it do they get devided by 6 when I have 6 team members and by 4 when I've got 4 team members?
It' works exactly this way. All XP you get is divided among your party members. 100 XP are shared 17-17-16-16-16-16 with 6 and 25-25-25-25 with 4 party members.

Yes, the XP is divided as equally as it can between everyone, then the remainder is divided by the smallest number it can and given to party members starting with the leader (the one at the top of the list on the right) and going down. In other words, the people at the bottom of the list (usually mages and rogues) will get slightly less XP and the people at the top (usually warrior-types and clerics) will get slightly more.
Great thanks guys! So it's not always the best way to go with 6 party members. With less you level up (a bit) faster though I can imagine the game being harder of course.

To an extent, yes. But you level faster with fewer, so it tends to balance out.
I generally find games designed for 6 characters to be most enjoyable with either 3 or 4, depending on the game. With more than that, you get more killing power (sometimes) but just as often you get extra characters that get in the way more than anything. With 4 characters rather than 6, you get a whopping 50% extra experience, per character. It makes a huge difference, though in the final stages of the game it can get a little harder if everyone hits the level cap.

In IWD2 it's a little trickier, since XP is scaled down the higher your level, and spawn points make extra monsters the higher your level. This can make the game harder without making it much more rewarding in terms of XP or loot, but it can be more rewarding just for the extra awesome of your characters. If you're planning on making a small-party or solo run through IWD2, I'd suggest finding a mod for MONCRATE.2DA, which is the file that controls the (rather bizarre) system for reducing XP gains for monsters depending on your level.
That's the thing, with a party of 6 I DO find that they get in the way of some things. It's mostly annoyes me controlling 6 characters at the same time so I'll switch 'back' to 4 instead.
