I mainly am wondering about which scripts to give ranged. There are defensive scripts and then ranged scripts but they are similar. Which one is most effective for ranged characters shooting bows/slings?

That's putting it rather mildly. Can anybody say 'Yahoo group spam(mer)'? Also, if he wasn't being outright praised, he took it as a personal attack and went on the offensive with his mass sock-puppeting. Eventually Bioware were spammed with invitations to his 'groups', and the big guns came out -- his groups disappeared. Good riddance.

Does the bard just stand their doing nothing playing song so no script?

If you are using your bard properly, he/she should be helping the party with buffs and debuffs, only then using Bard Song. A bard can/should also be able to go on the attack with either ranged or melee in a pinch. So micro-manage him/her just as a mage.
