and besides, dnd is so much about damage type and different weapons, the ablity to master many different types is also very helpfull. Your hammer powered cleric is wonderfull towards gollums, but what about when it gets something thats immune to blunt.. Or being able to bullseye a heavy cross bow with an acid bolt, before the fight begins and swaps to a trident when the creature charges.
also the number of attacks really goes up. When your attacking mulitple attacks per round, (prehaste) an ememy mage just has no chance to get off a spell. when you can land 2 hits per round (lvl 13+) , are 95% of the time your gonna land one of them.
Also your mage can cast dispell at will, leaving that enemy totally screwed for buffs. Pure fighters dont have to rely on cleric buffs to be viable. A fighter/cleric, Its all about buffing up, which works great in many situations. A gollem isnt gonna drop your defences, but take a beholder, or mind flare, or powerfull wizard, your gonna really wish you were a pure fighter, and hopefully your mage and cleric on your side, is just outta range and able to keep casting protections while you hack away..
