The specific error I get on launch is:

------------
ERROR in action number 1
of Create Event
for object objDevolver:

Error defining an external function.
-------------

And then it crashes, or sometimes it will run but with no sound. Thoughts?

There are a number of people who have this error. I had it once or twice too. Have you tried all the usual fixes? Reinstall game / restart PC / install latest .net / delete printer?

Thanks. I've reinstalled and restarted, although I'll try to install the latest .net.
Try running the game at 1280 x 768 resolution. I seem to recall seeing on the devs' Twitter that this was the optimal resolution for the game.

Thank you. I've installed the latest .net to no avail. I'm not really sure where to change the resolution, but since I'm guessing that wouldn't affect the game's inability to load audio resources I'm thinking something else is afoot.

Are there any other external frameworks Hotline Miami has suddenly relied upon and wouldn't install? The last version worked great.

As far as I can tell, the game relies on you changing the display resolution of your desktop/monitor itself as there are no resolution settings within the game itself, at least none that I could see. Basically, you'll have to go to your card's control panel software (if you have an ATI or Nvidia card) and change your system resolution there.

Well, you can also try to install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ redist. But Judasiscariot's suggestion might help too.

Hi Kestrelio,

I've had this issue on both my desktop and laptop since buying the game a couple of days after release. Although on my systems it crashed way more than it launched. Sans the awesome soundtrack, I can't say I was very motivated to play it when I did briefly get it running. However today, I finally found the solution to allow the game to properly load everything.

I located the game .exe in the new directory C:\GOG Games\Hotline Miami and opened its properties dialogue, clicked on the security tab, then the button to edit user permissions. I checked 'Full Control' for every user and group and saved. The game now loads all intro movies and audio correctly. It still crashes from time to time but I think this is just general instability.

I really hope this works for you!

Thanks for the tip! I've resolved the issue, but did so after updating Win 7 to SP1, which was long overdue anyway.

If I run into other issues, I'll keep your solution in mind!
I get this problem too. I have:
Uinstalled/reinstalled. Run the update. Set the permissions as described in this thread. Tried running it as Administrator. Installed the latest .Net Framework and C++. All to no avail.
EDIT: Also tried stopping the print spooler service.
System concerned is Windows 7, 64-bit SP1. With all Windows Updates applied.

Anything else I can try?

Also, the game may randomly start to work once you restart your PC.
I attempted the fix in this thread, and the game still won't launch for me.
So is this ever going to be fixed or what? It refuses to start in anything but 'original' mode
Well - seems MY problem is my outdated video card. When I installed windows 8.1 it reverted to the WDDM driver instead of using the legacy driver AMD provided.

To fix it you need to go into device manager, open up properties for ATI - 4800 series - click on update driver - browse - Let me Pick - then choose the one without the "Microsoft WDDM" at the end.

I can now run the updated version just fine.

Tried that, tried setting the monitor resolution to it, the game will not boot since installing 2.1
