When I hit left shift Aloy starts to sprint. Unfortunately, she is a terrible runner. For someone who can bounce up a mountain like a primate, her running ability is woeful. I'm jogging along and hit Left shift and her jog takes on a loping quality for about a second before speeding up into a sprint and even then I often find myself smashing Left Shift to get her to run faster.

The real downside of this is that when starting from a stationary position, her sprinting starts as a relaxed jog and only after one or two seconds does she work up to sprinting speed. This means that I cannot make the necessary leaps across chasms necessary to reach certain goals.

Is it me, my PC or something I am missing? I have a very high end machine. i9 processor, RTX 2080 Ti, and UHD 4K everything else. Is that the problem? What is going on here?
A rather hidden requirement but I guess your video card supports DX12?

Never noticed something similiar, > on my system she either walks or runs. Not gonna solve your problem, but there is an option to change the "run" -key behaviour: "push to toggle speed" / "push continously to run" - did you play with that option ?

That's odd. I agree with DerBesserwisser in that Aloy either walks or sprints. There isn't a wind up to it. I play with a PS4 controller and clicking the left stick makes her sprint. I'm guessing Left Shift on the keyboard should do the same.

Did you check to see if hold to sprint is enabled? The default config for controller is that you press the left stick and Aloy continues to sprint as long as you're moving. So maybe you don't have to hold down the Left Shift button, and maybe holding it down is resetting her sprint?
Just to be sure - there are two "go faster" keys - one to toggle between "Walk" and "Run", and another to "Sprint".

I've got both keys on mine set to "toggle" instead of "hold", and both work as they should.

I've tested how far she can "Sprint" once toggled, and basically; she apparently doesn't get tired or slow down - just keeps on Sprinting until you end it by some other action.

She also doesn't need to "wind up" to achieve Sprint-speed - she just takes-off and goes.
