Both for Remastered and the Classic versions it comes with?

Is there full Internet Protocol multiplayer?
(Seemingly removed from the Classic versions on Steam?)

Because disentangling the netcode from the World Opponent Network code was too hard?
Then there's this?
http://www.moddb.com/mods/won2-cd-retail-multiplayer-continuation/news/neuwon-homeworld-public-beta
(Or was it not a viable solution for Gearbox?)

Or is MultiPlayer consol-ized, with players on SteamWorks and Galaxy not being able to play together?

LAN is available on the remastered version. so Hamachi is recommended or some other VPN system.
LAN *only*?
You cannot input an IP address, the host *has to be* on the *same* Local Area Network?

Thats the point. Hamachi makes you connected with other users that are in the same VPN. for instance when one user hosts a game, you will see it because you are tunneled in this VPN.
There is a mod for classic that re-enables multiplayer (among a lot of other things): http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/t/homeworld-splendor-mod/93167

I know, I used Hamachi extensively when I didn't have access to my router settings (damn you cellular "ISP"'s!).

My point is that if you can input *any* IP(v4) address to connect to the host of the game, even if not on the same Local Area Network, then you don’t actually *need* any third party tools like Hamachi or Tunngle, as long as the host has proper Internet access and knows how to set up port forwarding.

IMHO the “LAN” moniker should be reserved for the (rare) games that can only scan your LAN (real or virtual) to find hosts, and that don’t allow inputting IP numbers (I think Dungeon Keeper 2 is like that?).

Yes, you can only play with other GOG Galaxy users. Says so on the store page.

To be precise, that's for the "Remastered" versions?
Also, this is in contradiction with this post :

Before I buy: Is there some kind of LAN-DRM? The Steam Version of Homeworld Remastered forces you to create a "Shift-Account" before you can even access the Multiplayer Menu. So if this would be still in the gog-Version I fear, that I could not give a copy of the gog-Version to my Friends and play on LAN, even if they haven't buy the game and so are not connected to gog galaxy. Or is it possible to access the multiplayer without Galaxy?
Can you PLAY LAN with other GoG versions WITHOUT galaxy or any other external system (like Shift)?
