I had never played the hitman games. And wow if people were not kidding on it being one of the most brutally hard games to finish in a "proper way" which is on Normal and without using the stupid respawns. I don't know if me playing with a Xbox 360 Controller (via pinnacle gp) made it even harder. But nonetheless, now that i finished it, i bet the rest of the games of the series will feel like piece of cake.
I found Hitman 2 just as hard but for different reasons.

If you consider the proper way to finish every missions with a Silent Assassin rating on Professional difficulty, there are a couple of bullshit missions that will have you pull your hair out in frustration due to how unfair these missions are, notably:

The first mission where the guard disguise doesn't work in close and mid range (In close range, every guard will recognize you as soon you enter a room containing a guard, and at mid range, they'll start walking toward you to take a closer look at your disguise before recognizing you right away),

Then you've got two missions in Japan where you cannot be seen by the watch towers or any guard patrolling the area, and one of them has trucks that have the tendency to drive over guards, meaning people will find bodies of guards ran over and it will count against you in your "Bodies found" stats,

And last but not least, one of the middle east mission, where you got to haul a sniper rifle across town, avoiding the gaze of everyone, to land a perfect shot on a moving target, which may be even more difficult if your mouse sensibility sucked balls like mine did (I had to adjust mouse sensibility to max setting because mine was slow as hell during the whole game except during menu and sniping, so when it was time to land that perfect shot, the aiming was janky as hell)

The rest of the missions are great, but hindered by the fact the sedatives have a long animation, and do not last for the entire duration of the mission, and your sneaking speed is slower than a guard's walking speed, so the only way to catch up on a guard is to game the system by walking behind the guard, then, in a split second, toggling the sneak mode, drawing the sedatives and knocking the guard unconscious.

All in all, of the earlier games in the series, I always thought Silent Assassin had the best story, music and missions (excluding the bullshit ones), but Contracts had a much better engine, and while bullshit was present in both Codename 47 and Silent Assassin, I had a much easier time accommodating myself to the bullshit of the first game than the bullshit of the second game.
Veteran Hitman player here, and my verdict is that Hitman 2 is brutally hard, especially the broken parts like the mountain missions in Japan. Codename 47 tests your patience frequently with it's loose game design, but Silent Assassin does it entirely intentionally. If you jog around too much within 20 meters of armed guards they go nuts and start shooting you and in this game, most of the time when one enemy is alerted the whole map descends upon you shortly after. It is further complicated by how most missions in Silent Assassin are more James Bond-like than the rest of the series that mostly takes places in public or civilian spaces. You'll be dead tired with Russian soldiers before the end of the second game.

Contracts is my personal favourite, mostly because of the art direction and atmosphere, but also because it is the last game in the series set entirely outside North America. The early Hitman games were European crime cinema turned into games, while Blood Money and Absolution are embarassing showcases of what many Europeans think American cinema is like. Contracts is a hard game with many situations where your 20 minute effort hangs in the balance in a split second window that must be used perfectly or the whole thing falls apart.

You must have the capacity and patience to memorise the paths of some 20-30 moving characters on each mission to make it through this series. That is pretty much what the games are like when you deconstruct them, it is just a memory excercise.

oh man, now am worried. I guess it will be a long play too.

Codename 47 tests both your patience and your nerves all the time. Specially when missions fail because of a game glitch.

Finished Hitman 2 this week. No wonder you say it is as difficult as Codename 47. Trying to reach the top ratings would make it so. Otherwise, just playing it and finishing it in normal is not difficult just a bit tedious and frustrating in certain parts. Now off to play Hitman 3.
Prepare for a trippy, bleak and sometimes very unsettling experience. Contracts has a very subtle sense of dread and coldness to it's world. I remember being very unsettled by the Beldingford Manor mission, it has a nightmarish atmosphere. No, not because you're breaking into a large mansion at night. It is nightmarish because of the subject matter: You're assassinating a rich bastard who has kidnapped another socialite to be hunted and killed in a twisted version of the british fox hunt. The whole game is full of debauched individuals like this, but this one stands out to me. You do not want to get caught there, these people think they are above the law and everyone else and they will kill you for sport.

By the way, in case you are wondering, Contracts is a sort of half-remake of Codename 47. Half the missions are reimagined from Codename 47, which I remember one of the devs claimed was partially motivated by how C47 was a PC exclusive title while Silent Assassin was a relative success on the consoles. That doesn't mean you will be retreading old water though, the reused missions are completely reimagined and present different challanges and VERY different presentation. All of it with that unique nightmarish Contracts tone.

I can't decide if playing Contracts is more of a chore or a captivating experience. I know it sends bloody icy chills down my spine though, terrified that I will be caught and dragged off to a torturous death at the hands of the many villains in the game.

To be honest. Both Codename 47 and silent assasin do feel like a chore at many times. Will come back to this thread when i finish it. :P
I'm referring to having to push yourself through the game's oppressive atmosphere. After a mission in Contracts I often wonder if it is worth subjecting myself to the depressing gloom. Much like how I forced myself through Doom 3, all the while being taxed by loud jump scares and fighting in the dark.

Basically having to go through 'wow, that was awesome, but now I'm spent. This is exhausting!'

To be fair though, the game is supposed to be 47's fever-nightmare and at that it truly succeeds.
Congratulations! You accomplished something that I thought was impossible. Especially the "Say hello to my little friend" mission which has to be so fn hard cause if you alert one soldier you might as well put the gun to your head and commit suicide. I'm still stuck there and fear that I will never pass that mission.

And surprisingly enough, it's actually possible to finish that mission without getting your cover blown, nor killing half of the camp with a sniper rifle. The last Rotterdam mission is the one I found to be the hardest due to how long it is to proceed through the level, and most of the time a single mistake meant restarting from scratch.

It was all about 2 things for me: The silenced gun and just have the right outfit at the right time. You need to change your disguise twice, otherwise passing that mission will be sort of impossible.
I find Hitman 2 harder, in an unfair way. Hitman 1 is just "stealth limited", in the sense it's more about anybody you can withouth being noticed. In the second one, they tried to make and actual stealth game, but IMO, they failed, as if you want to do a SA run, you must follow a very closed path.
IMO, Contracts is way better. Specially the setting.

My rating is Blood Money (because of playability) > Contracts > 47 > SA.

That doesn't mean Hitman 2 is not enjoyable. I just think it has the most boring missions in the saga, is flawed and the atmosphere is not as good. An excellent game nonetheless, I almost burn my XBOX as a las playing it :P

I like absolution, but I find it to be a third person shooter :P

Now i have finished all Hitman games minus the new one.

Hitman: Silent Assasin

Some parts are really hard, yet overall is not as hard as Codename 47. Not by a long shot.

Hitman: Contracts

Found it actually really easy up to a fault. Normal mode feels wrong. Had to play it in hard for it to feel right.

Hitman: Blood Money

Fully get why it is the golden standard when it comes to Hitman games. Everything feels right. From gameplay, level design to down to the graphics.

Hitman: Sniper Challenge
Cool as intro to the graphics of Hitman: Absolution. Unfortunately it is also a warning of at what ridiculous lengths IO Interactive would go to make you replay a level.

Hitman: Absolution
Now i know why some people hate it. Judging from Steam Achievements Stats. Only about 25% actually finish the game.

I liked the game. But it indeed does not feels like a Hitman game. It reminded me of what i felt while playing Max Payne 3. Very good game, It just didn't was at all like a Max Payne game.

What i hated was the astounding amount of grinding you need to do and what you are expected to do if you want all achievements. No wonder most people seems to give up half way.

HItman: Sniper

Good, Just what is needed given Hitman: Sniper Challenge leaves wanting a lot more.

Hitman GO

Excellent. Loved everything about it. Even got all Achievements and played without using more than one hint as required or paying any extra. Highly recommended.

---

When it comes to HITMAN, i will just wait until the full game is released and discounted to play it. Meaning until late 2017.

Is it? Your mileage may vary. Here Silent Assassin > Blood Money.

The-Business: Is it? Your mileage may vary. Here Silent Assassin > Blood Money.
Silent Assassin is still too rough. It also got some weird glitches. Blood money is simply the first one that feels like a fully baked game in every way. For me i would put: the order as: Blood Money > 47 > Contracts > Silent Assassin. Absolution i really judge as an standalone like with the other supplementary Hitman Games.
