Hi everybody,
I am familiar with Homam series, but unfortunately I have Homam 2 and 3 without expansions so I was wondering which one I should buy when I get some money.
I strongly recommend Heroes 3 with both of the expansions. The number of scenarios is huge, there are several fan-made mods available, and it's the best-looking of the three.
All of the Heroes games are fun, and while there are some minor differences (e.g. the combat grid in Heroes 1 is smaller), 1-3 are all very similar.
I am currently playing Heroes 5, and I am really enjoying that, too. Sadly it's not available on GOG!
Heroes2 expansion gives you several new adventure objects, artifacts (and one set) and a campaign.
Heroes 3 expansions besides campaigns contain one imba castle (no, Conflux is hardly balanced), some new neutral monsters (even some from Heroes 2 like mummy or nomad) and possibility to combine certain artifacts to sets.
I have probably forgotten to mention something, this comparation is only what I remember off top of my head so take it with a grain of salt.
But to ultimately decide, I'd pick that one which you like more. You can't pick the wrong one, both are great.
Heck, gimme yer mail and pick one of them, I'll gift you the other.

I guess I will prefer Homam 3 (My first Homam game :) ), my email is Kluz.L@seznam.cz and you dont have to give it to me :) sure I would be happy as hell, but I guess Homam 3 will keep me busy for long time :)
Homam 3 looks really neat with all expansions and stuff thanks for tip :) Homam 2 will be probably my next buy, when I will have some money.

Will Homam 4 be in some time on gog?
Depends on Ubisoft's mood, money-hunger level and DRM stance.
They haven't released anything else since their introduction here (save for Driver), but many games could arrive here. However since all their games are $9.99 (even for HoMM1 - which is IMO completely inferior to HoMM2 or 3), so they could wait for higher price points to sell newer games for more. On the other hand GOG team can be focused on getting new distributors, so another Ubi games might be low on their priority list.
Really hard to say which one is more possible.
If I were in charge of the Heroes franchise at Ubisoft, I would hold on to Heroes 4 and/or Chronicles until an opportune moment. They've been hinting at a Heroes 6 in development for a little while now. If that is the case, I would wait until a re-release would best bolster 6's sales to let them back out.
True, Clash of Heroes has come and gone (and is going to be ported with bonuses), which was a missed opportunity for them, but Capybara probably did not had a say in that.
Before I made my terrific H2 balancing mod, I'd say H3.
With my H2 mod, they are about equal in gaming goodness.
With that said I ALSO made a H3 mod that balances the game (it doesn't make any game changing mods like WoG... it only balances the game)
What does the H2 balancing mod do?
