The installer has a checkbox to disable DOSbox, which was a total relief for about two seconds until I realized that checking this box disables the "Start Installation" button. What kind of deceitful garbage is this? What hoops have I got to jump though to get a game that I can actually play?

you play it with it DOSBox.
if you remove the tick for DOSBox then you have to point the installer to an installed version of DOSBox.
You can play the game without DOSBox, but not install without DOSBox.
All DOS executables are there and the DOSBox files (aside from the configuration file) are in one directory which you can delete if you want
I'm aware that the regular .exes are in there, but they don't do me any good without a CD.
if the game requires a cd to run then you can burn the cue/bin that should be in there as well

I don't quite get it where you're heading.
You would like to play DOSBox based games WITHOUT DOSBox?
Well that's not possible. Unchecking DOSBox checkbox in installer allows you to use your own DOSBox as long as it's not to old or unknown version (which installer checks).
But without DOSBox provided by installer or your own sources your're will not be able to play games.

I don't think you understand.
I don't want to play the DOSbox game, PERIOD. I want to play the vastly superior Win95 executable that is included in the download.

This is strictly the DOS version of the game. I don't know why you have the impression that the Windows version is included. It isn't. Hence the Dosbox requirement.
Looks like the Windows version to me, man.
The "Please insert the Heroes CD-ROM" prompt it produces when executed seems to back up this observation.

What just from looking at the icon?
Right click heroes.exe and select properties. Look at the number of tabs on the dialogue. Windows programs have four. DOS programs have nine.
Also, someone already asked, and GOG confirmed that it's the DOS version.

May I suggest putting a disclaimer of sorts on the game page detailing that the game is the DOSBox version? Perhaps it will save confusion later on. I just checked the game page and nowhere did it say it was DOS or the Win95 version. Just my 2 cents and definitely not trying to criticize.
Thanks!

I totally agree. But for an other reason: I'd be able o know what I can run with my DOSBox on MacOS X...

Until GOG adds the info to game pages you can refer DOSBox Wiki to see what GOG games use DOSBox.

Yep. I knew that but I forgot it... Thanks for the reminder.
