I found the Chronicles campaigns the most interesting ones. Although the game itself is not that great, but I really love the story-telling and the themes. What's your thought?
I'm currently playing Chronicles, and I agree storywise they are the best campaigns from what I can judge so far. Problem is that they are too easy, even on Impossible, thanks to the maps being littered with free stuff everywhere.

For a good challenge I prefer the HoMM 2 expansion Price of Loyalty.
+1 for the Chronicles campaigns, which I am not quite halfway through right now. They are lovingly crafted. Shadow of Death's campaign comes close, but even that doesn't have quite as much storytelling as the Chronicles campaigns do.
Chronicles campaigns are great from the storytelling angle, but the most fun campaign for me was the Rise of the Necromancer SoD campaign. Rampaging the countryside with Sandro's army of liches is highly entertaining, and it's got a decent story to it as well.

Indeed it's way too easy caomparing to the two expansions.

Haven't played many campaigns but "Playing with Fire" was, by far, my favorite. Loved the story and the increasing difficulty of the maps was fun.
"Liberation" from HoMM3 was my favorite single campaign, and I liked the stories in HoMM4 the best I'd say (overall, but every game had some really good ones).
Chronicles, with my single favourite probably being Revenge of the Beastmasters or Masters of the Elements, due the internal character conflict created.
Am I the only one who didn't like the storytelling part of Chronicles? I admit, at the beginning I thought it was cool but then... well, getting a wall of text every two or three rounds became more and more tiring. I was getting frustrated but then I had a revelation - those massages do not affect the gameplay or at least not significantly - sometimes you got/lost resources but since you cannot avoid it - why should I bother? I stopped reading them at all.

Perhaps it's because the gameplay of HoMM3 is so absolutely brilliant that it eclipses other aspects of the game and therefore the story seems to be a bit weak when compared with other titles.

Anyway, my favorite campaigns are probably those which were directly connected with Might and Magic VII (my favorite from the series). And the best was Long Live the Queen. When I was playing MMVII I either decided to create and independent Harmondale kingdom or join Erathia. I've beaten the game several times but I've never sided with those pesky elves.

That's understandable. I get a lot of my enjoyment from games out of the lore/fiction, but not everyone is like that.

Don't get me wrong, I usually enjoy it too (I spent a lot of time reading descriptions of units in Age of Wonders - they are really great) but the thing is that those massages in Chronicles were a bit... too artificial. Most of them weren't anyhow connected with the gameplay. During one turn I killed two rival heroes and conquered his castle. Only one hero with abysmal army remained to be killed. And yet the very next turn I got a pessimistic rant how oppressed we were and how badly our situation was. I mean, hello?! I know that those messages were supposed to create the atmosphere and help you you identify with Tarnum but I couldn't stand this dichotomy...

And then pf course, as I mentioned previously, I was so eager to play it that I wouldn't probably enjoy those constant interruption even if they were well synchronized.
My all time favorite "Story" was in a Single Player map, from Heroes 3, called Battle of the Sexes. The damn thing was just so hilarious that you MUST play it and try BOTH genders.

Here is one quote that is from the Women and happens day 23 (Week 2 Day 6):

"Unfortunately, you were never that good at measuring - you always seemed to over estimate space, and that could get you into trouble while doing construction. So you request several measuring rulers to be exact about construction"

LMAO haha.
My favourite campaign so far is Lamanda's.

I also tried the first of the Chronicles, only part I liked in it so far was the part with all the peasents. That part made me laugh, but was way to easy.

Need to play some more, haven't played them all yet, and may be some time till I do.

I am with you on this. Chronicles is fun for what it is, so long as I skip through the crappy, overdone 'story'/walls of text.

I think the Armageddon's Blade and SoD campaigns were the most fun for me but Heroes 2 + PoL were good also.
Gauldoth Half-Dead from HoMM 4 deserves a very highly rated mention as well, a brilliant piece of storytelling.
