Hi,
For some reason in Heroes of Might and Magic III I keep getting the message that I have less than 5MB of free hard drive space (I have 52GB free space) and the game automatically closes. The game ran fine the first few times I ran it but now I keep getting this error. I am running the game on a dual 80GB hard drive laptop - the game is installed on the secondary drive (one without windows on it). I was wondering if the dual drive setup was causing problems and if not is there any way around this problem ?
-Thanks

Ralackk: What OS are you using?

I am using Windows XP SP3.
Hmm was kind of hoping it was vista or win7. I found a possible fix on a site I can't link to.
1)Go to your "\Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete\maps"
2)Create a directory on your desktop named Temp (or whatever)
3)Move all the files from the \Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete\maps directory to the Temp directory
4)Run the .exe
5)exit the game
6)move the maps back
Not sure why it would work but its worth a try just incase.
I seem to have got it working in Windows 95 compatability mode. I don't know if it will continue to have no problems (or why it would not have memory problems in Win 95) so I'll play around a bit and see if the error occurs again. Thanks for the quick reply Ralackk!
I'd never seen this problem until today. Have been playing it for a couple of weeks, including a session earlier today, and now every time I run the game it tells me there is less than 5MB disk space and closes (there is actually over 100GB free). I have tried rebooting but it still does it.

Ah, hadn't realised there were other replies - I found this from the GOG support search, and it only showed the original post. I have since tried Win95 compatibility mode and that worked. [I'm using Win7 64bit]

Yes just a little fyi for you in the future. Each game, or game series like the Heroes of M&M 1-5, on gog has it's on spot on the forums here and is a good place to check for any problems as well as for general gameplay advice.
I've just got this error too. I've been playing all week on the same save and nothing has changed, it was even saving during the game today, but I went to save again and it showed this error message.

It is because older games had trouble to estimate HDD free space on large HDDs and had overflow in calculations.

It is very easy to cure. If it says that at least 5 MB free space required, then simply make a copy of any file which is around 6-10 MB in size. It will overflow the calculation again and you will be able to play the game.

It works! Wonderful! Thanks!

There actually is more universal but harder to master solution which covers almost all old Windows games.

1. Visit https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/get-started/adk-install and download ADK for your version and build of the Windows.
2. During installation untick all the options and select just Application Compatibility Tollkit.
3. Run appropriate variant of the Compatibility Administrator. You must use the 32-bit version for 32-bit applications and the 64-bit version to work for 64-bit applications.
4. Select your .exe
5. Refer to this article for options explanation. For free space problem specifically you need to activate EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace
8. Apply everything and exit.
9. Run your game without free space measurement problems.

In the same manner palette problems for most of the games with 8bpp graphics could be fixed, etc.
