This is the game that got me hooked on map-based strategy! I'm ecstatic -- and possibly aroused -- that HOMM3 has come to GOG. This game is near the top of the list for my own review site. (GOG! Stop reading my mind!) But here's a quickie for you.
If you enjoy runnind around gigantic world maps, hunting down enemies, staking off choke points, and securing resources to muster an army worthy of besieging your opponent's castle walls -- HOMM3 delivers. The game requires a balance of resource management, tactics, and strategic movement, blended together with magic spells and artifacts that can prove to be real game changers.
The game is something of an RPG, as your armies cluster around heroes who gain experience and impart bonuses. It's also like a chess game, as the armies consist of stacks of units with different movements and combat abilities.
The art of the game is in balancing your heroes with a good match of battle units. Balance is very important, especially in the beginning of each new map. Armies grow very slowly, and over-extending will quickly bring your downfall ... but you must also be brave and take chances, or all the best bonuses and resources on the map may fall to your enemies. There are different races to play with very clear-cut advantages and disadvantages, which makes mastering the balancing act even more interesting.
A strong fantasy narrative binds the game together. The usual themes of vengeance and power come together with a sense of destiny and purpose. The maps do a good job of working with the story, which helps maintain the epic feel.
Fans of Disciples 2 will find comfortable territory here. The look and feel is brighter and, to my mind, cleaner.
HOMM3 is a must-buy!
