I start up the game as normal, but when i go to multi player and go to online it just straight out closes the game. nothing comes up just cloeses the game.

Vanilla Heroes 3 doesn't support online multiplayer anymore. You have to use Horn of the Abyss unofficial expansion to be able to play online: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=39830. You'll also need the HD mod: https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/.

Partially true. With the HD mod you can play Heroes III without HotA, but you can only join rooms, as you have to donate to create ones yourself. If you're running the game for the first time, it's unskippable. At any other time, just left-click.

With the HD mod, you can disable it altogether.

Does anyone play this game online without HotA? I think there's no point in it. HotA adds so many good features that there's no reason to play online with the base Complete. Anyway, I had no idea that the HD mod adds an online lobby by itself.
