So the 1.0.1.28 GOG version is now updated to 2.0.0.34. What has changed about this game besides the version number?

From what I've observed, there are several differences:
- DOSBox was updated to 0.74
- They got rid of GOGwrap.exe and now stick to windows shortcuts for starting the game
- DOSBox configuration is now split between multiple files (which makes it easier to setup globally)
- There's now Start menu link for DOS-based setup that allows you to select soundcard settings etc.

It's nothing major though, the game itself is untouched.

Hm, a lot of these changes could be done to more than a few older games. I guess HoMM got the treatment because of the soundcard feature.

What is the process for updating the game? Do I have to download the new installer and launch it? Should I uninstall the older version? And what with my saves?

Before this new update I was playing at 1920x1200, or at least 16:10, with the game stretched (no black borders), now the game itself is in 4:3 or something, and I have black borders on the right and left side.
Can this be changed in the DOSBox settings so it stretches it out again, and how? What I did was:
1) Make a copy of the folder with the game files just in case
2) Download the installer and choose either location (you can move the folder around as you please, won't break the game)
3) Fix some settings in the new Launch Graphic Mode Setup shortcut that gets placed in the folder.
4) Game runs perfectly (except for my problem above) and my saves were untouched.

In hindsight, I see that I should have either removed the old files or installed to a new folder, as and all the old files are still there even though they aren't needed, and then just moved my saved games to the new folder.

So to sum it up:
It doesn't remove files, so installing in the same folder keeps your saves, but also keeps files that aren't needed anymore.

I think that they changed the resolution settings (but I cannot check it now).

Basically open heroes.conf in an editor (eg notepad) and search for screen resolution. GOG used to set it to "Original", which meant 640x480 for Heroes 1. Now if it is stretched depends on your monitor/videocard settings.

I presume they changed the setting into 0x0, which means "use current resolution, keep aspect ratio, add black bars to the missing parts"

try this:
use the start menu to find the link to "/gog.com/heroes of might and magic/heroes of might and magic" and right click on it, choose "open file location"
in that folder, open and edit "dosboxHOMM1.conf"
do a search and replace for "aspect=true" to "aspect=false"
save n restart the game

Actually, there was another 2.0.0.32 installer before this update. I just some days ago downloaded the game again and noticed that the installer was less then half the size of old installer (~25mb compared to old ~65mb). There was no music in the game, and the introduction sequence (although not important for the game or even particularly good) was missing.

I contacted gog about this and they threw up a fixed installer which is the current version immediately.

Edit: Just noticed in another thread that I was obviously far from the only one that noticed the missing content in the previous installer and made gog aware of it.

Got a new Update: Version has gone up to 2.1.0.38.
FIlesize has changed from ~70mb to 370mb!!

I haven't installed it yet, but now we really need a changelog. Added 300mb? Seems like an unlikely huge addition.

16-bit Stereo Music were added (as well as 8-bit Stereo sound set). Now the GoG version became closer to original Heroes of Might and Magic for DOS released September 6, 1995. But original one is still better, you know. :-)

Didn't work.
I had used the "Graphic Mode Setup" thing and ticked off "Keep Aspect Ratio", so in "dosboxHOMM1.conf" it was already set to "aspect=false".

Setup v1.x depend on old NoCD scheme.New setup clear it.Good job,GOG.
