Just wondering is it a good game?
In all fairness, I bought it a few weeks back ONLY because I read some of the classic M&M story elements would be addressed. It took me a wopping 1.5 days to de-install it and play HoMM3 again, however. I just couldn't get into it. It looks and feels like a boring Turn-based version of Warcraft III that is ten years late for the party.

No Legacy Heroes or Legacy Scenarios could unfortunately save it from being awfully boring :(
It's a pretty good fantasy TBS game, it was buggy at launch but they have fixed the critical issues and the majority of the bugs (It also had an always-online DRM but ubisoft removed it after a while);
Thanks to this the game got a lot of hate from the previous instalments fans.

Imho its the same HoMM stuff, just different in some aspects.

I'm wondering as well. As long as the always on DRM was there It was a sure no buy but now I would have already bought it if it would have been on sale for a bit cheaper.

How good is it if I would say that HOMM V is my favorite one, slightly above III?
It's not that bad @ all. You get use to it. I purchased it the day of it's release (like all HoMM games) It took damn near 9 months for them to patch-it so it played like it should have been since day one. You can score it now for like $35.00 or so. It's worth it IMHO. Or you can wait for the new add-on, which I'm sure will include the original game. HoMM 1,2 & 3 were my all-time favorites, but it's still a "Heroes" game.
HVI? Yeah I'd say its worth it. Its actually a different game than H III, but follows the same formula. A lot of flashy (unneccesary?) graphics make it a strain for older computers, but I probably have a worse computer than most GOGers and it runs ok ^_^
Nope, after a year and half of patching it
's stil a mess. The story and voice acting are atrocious and missions boring. The system is very straight forward and watered down comparing to previous installments.

Really not worth the time and money. The most tragic thing was when I heard the grass theme from Heroes 2 and remembered how much better that game was.
How can we know if you would like it? This is extremely strongly dependent on your character and style. I hated both HoMM V and Heroes VI. With a passion. Kill them. Kill them with fire, those two games, for me, are an abomination.

But others might like them. Maybe even you. You might even like Heroes VI.

I have it, and for about 6 months after getting it I didnt play it...but now I have over 500 hours in game.....I like it :)
I really like this one. It's the first homm i really enjoyed playing since homm3.
I would still rate homm2&3 better than this but it took the right turn (I mean who didn't lose their hope for a moment when homm4 came out?) and is really fun to play.
I look forward to the expansion with a new town this month.

I would highly recommend buying this if you are an early fan of this series.

I didn't - for me it was the best HoMM ever made, actually. I guess a lot of people secretly like HoMM IV, as evidenced by the success of Eador Genesis.
I remember Homm4 as being terribly dissapointing and losing out to HoMM3 by a longshot on pretty much every category. Still yeah I played it and have some fun nostalgic memories of it (Music was GREAT!) HoMM6 was more dissapointing tbh :s
I can't believe that the DRM was removed, as the game was based on!
So, all the online gameplay has been built back in the solo play??
I'm another one who thinks HMM IV was the best in the series, and I'm someone who grew into H III and Chronicles first.
