Hi, among games I'am currently playing there is HoMM 1.
I played Heroes 3 years ago but the first game is hardcore and unbalanced between armies.
In scenario 5 "Castle Ironfist", I play Queen Lamandra (witch) and I can't defeat Ironfist's army because of too many heroes with huge armies. I found a walkthrough on Youtube, but it's for a mage and I don't have dragons or a dimension door spell !

I don't want to restart the campaign from scratch so if you beat this scenario with a witch or you have tips, you are welcome...

I've won HoMM 1 with all factions except just the witches (or sorceresses).
Anyhow, this map is a slow map where you have plenty of time to build up, and the enemy won't come to you.

You don't need to restart the campaign, but it sounds like it may be a good idea to restart the scenario.

One weakness the sorceress has is lack of combat ability and that magic is more focused on Knowledge than Power. So it may be a good idea to recruit a Barbarian as your main hero to lead your army. Or a Warlock if you want to use spells that hurt. The Knight troops generally have low Hit Points but high Defence, so a Warlock with good spells is probably the best match. Recruiting a Warlock early is a good idea anyway due to their Scouting ability.

Build up your starting town to a Castle on your first turn to get money rolling in, and continue building it up every turn to be able to recruit as much troops as possible, even if you don't yet have enough money to recruit them all.
Try to get Phoenixes in your starting castle ASAP. It takes a lot of Mercury, though. So you may have to chose between a Warlock+Magic Guild combo or a Barbarian+Phoenixes combo.

I just finished the "Castle Ironfist" scenario with a Warlock + Magic Guild combo (including a dimension door very hard to obtain). Thanks for your help !
I will start the "Castle Slayer" scenario later, it took me the week-end to complete it. Maybe I will come back for some of your good advices if I have worries with the barbarians ;)
Glad I could be of help. :-)

IIRC the Castle Slayer scenario is harder, with the Barbarians coming for you from across a desert.
If so having a Barbarian hero will make it easier to traverse the desert.
I think is not that hard, because the scenario is really simple. While other scenarios are labyrinths, this is is just a plain desert which can be sorted with a barbarian or nomads in your army. It's pretty simple because the enemy allways come from the north, while you are in the south. Maybe is a little tough but the scenario is not that difficult if you know how to deal with a dessert.
Although the AI starts with eight barbarian heroes in Castle Slayer, keeping an eye on the recruiting section in your castle and recruiting every single defeated or retreating barbarian heroes can severely cripple the AI since, if I recall correctly, the entire map is covered with desert and snow tiles (which drastically reduce the movement rate of non barbarian heroes.) Before long the AI will have an hard time securing its land and your fresh troops will reach the frontlines faster than your opponent can handle. If you are lucky may even be able to hire some barbarian heroes with artifacts and a higher level than level 1.
Just a little necro to say I just finished to complete the HoMM 1 campaign with the sorceress. The Warlock + phoenixes combo (including a magic guild) is the best way to defeat your foes one by one with a single strong hero.

There are obelisks on the Knight, Barbarian, and Sorceress maps, leading to an ultimate artifact. As you likely know these can give a hero a nice boost on one of the main attributes.

Knight: from the first town in which you are able to build boats, buy one then follow the river all the way west.

Barbarian: you need Dimension Door. If you have it, use the spell to teleport north along the western mountains. There are small alcoves where you can land. You need enough knowledge to be able to cast the spell numerous times to get there and back, likely not a problem if you are Sorceress.

Sorceress: on the upper landmass, the southwestern Sorceress castle is near a clearing in the forest with a cluster of obelisks - requires Dimension Door to get in and out.
