The GOG download page seems to be indicating that this is version 2.0.0 of the game (and the installer seems to say 2.0.0.12), and it's got all manner of graphical bugs and crashing problems. A quick google search has found multiple instances of what appear to be unofficial fan patches upgrading from 2.0 to 2.2 and from 2.2 to 3.0, but I can't find so much as a description for any of them.

What version is the GOG download really? What patches are recommended to get things as functional as possible, and where can I find them? Which version(s) will accept the Equilibris overhaul?

The GOG installer version number usually has nothing to do with the game version number.
HoMM IV is updated to version 3 with its expansion pack Winds of War. Both expansion packs are installed automatically by the GOG installer. Hence, your current game version is 3.

I'm not quite sure about Equilibris, but there are files on the Equilibris download page to replace the heroes.exe and editor.exe of WoW in order to install the Equilibris mod.
