Cannot get the editor to open up. Tried all ways possible with compatibility. Nothing works.
My OS is windows 10 so am guessing that's gonna end up being the problem :).

The editor tries to open and immediately crashes and says closes do to errors but does not show me the nature of the error.

Anyone able to get the editor to work on Windows 10.
I'm pretty sure it's a DOS program, so try running it through DOSBox, like the game itself does.
If it's a Win 95 program, you'll probably need Virtual Box and an old (95 or 98) version os Windows.

EDIT: actually, I just cheched and it works for me using Win 7 64 Bit, without help of DOSBox. That suggests it's a Windows program, so DOSBox won't help.

I have the same issue, it doesn't open, even when setup to use DOSBox. Even if you try to manually run it from within DOSBox it fails stating it can't be run in DOS mode. See the attached jpg.

So the HOMM1 editor is not able to run within DOSBox, but unfortunately it also doesn't run in Windows 10, so thanks very much to GOG for not fixing it.

I've even downloaded the latest version from GOG, the Editor still does NOT work.

I've experienced this with other game editors when they are released from GOG as well. They get the game working but always end up failing with things like editors. DUMB.

You are talking about a piece of software that's more than 20 years old running on a system that wasn't even conceived back then. DOS programs are (fairly) easy to run thanks to all the hard work the good people from DOSBox put, but those early 32 bit executables are really tricky to run on modern systems.

GOG are doing all they can to run them, but their resources should be prioritized to having the actual game work. If they can get the game but not the editor to run, what do you want them to do? Not publish the game at all?

Anyway, did you try all the compatibility options? Maybe one of them will help. If not you can try running it on a Windows XP virtual machine, or through Windows 3.1 or 95 installed on DOSBox.

Was trying to launch the editor, in latest GoG version of the game , under W10x64
As long as you drop a copy of 'wing32.dll' in %Windir%/SysWoW32, it'll (try) to start;
However, it seems to have a CD check, and the disk image included w/ that GoG release,
is not the correct one (you CAN mount the file, 'Homm1.gog', using PowerISO),
but it looks to be disk for the DOS version.
