I have never played HOMM5 or any of its expansions and I am trying to figure out how to level up. I read the basics manual as well as the Tribes of the East manual and neither gave me a clue on how to level up. I also looked on Youtube and all the videos I found were about an hour or more long and I had no idea where (or even if) the video would explain how to level up.

I assume I need to do the leveling in the army window but couldn't find any way to do so. I left clicked, right clicked, and double clicked everywhere I could think of but nothing happened. I am assuming that 100,000 XP is enough to go from level 2 to 3 (my hero started at level 2).

The bar below my hero is all green. I assume that means something.

Can anyone help?

TIA,
kk

When your hero gets enough XP, a window pops up telling you about the level(s) up and you'll have a chance to choose skills per level up, etc.

100,000 XP is enough for a few levels, at least early. How did you get it?

The green bar shows how much movement your hero has left, iirc.

Thank you very much for your reply.

And, um, (ahem!) I used a cheat from Cheathappens for the XP I put that much XP into my hero because I was trying to figure out how to level up. However, no windows ever opened up for me to choose anything. I'm sure I did something wrong somewhere. I'll try it again.

And I should have explained that the green bar I was referring to was the green bar under the hero in the army screen. When I scrolled over it, it showed my XP so I thought it might have something to do with that.

I'm going to guess the game checks for level up any time the hero would (normally) gain experience. Go kill something and see if you level up. I just tried it and I got the level up window as soon as I successfully finished a battle.

If you add XP via a cheat, the game might not have checked whether the hero deserves a new level.

Ah! On the adventure map, the green bar under the hero portrait is their movement.

You were talking about the green bar under the hero picture in the Hero Stats screen. I just looked, and that is indeed an XP progress bar. As above, try killing something to get XP in a way the game expects it to be earned and see what happens.

You don't need cheats to level up. :)

On most maps your heroes will find plenty of treasure chests. On opening, they will present your hero with a choice whether to keep the money or gain experience points, ranging from 500 to 2000. A new hero will only need 1000 points to reach the next level.
Buying an army and slaughtering some foes might also do the trick. ;)

I don't recall whether the range expanded in HoMM5 (I doubt it?), but in prior games the chests might have held 2000, 1500, or 1000 gold, and choosing the XP option gives the hero 1500/1000/500 XP respectively (gold - 500).

A level 1 hero needs to reach 1000 XP (you forgot a zero) for level 2.

But slaughtering your foes is by far the biggest source of XP. Get that army and get to killing! :D
Also you may need "skillwheel". It's a small fan-made program showing skills dependencies. They are different for base game and for both expansions. But GOG gives only one version - for Tribes of the East expansion.

For example found old discussion (or search word "skillwheel" on this forum):

Oops, added the missing zero. ;)

Yeah, 1500 is probably right.
