Hey guys, this isn't the biggest of deals, but every time I try putting HOMM4 in windowed mode, it does nothing.

I've obviously unchecked full screen in options, it just flashes black for a sec, and when I go back in it's automatically checked again. I've tried F4, it just flashes black for a sec again and does nothing. I've tried alt+enter, same nothingness happens. I've tried changing res AND unticking fullscreen, and it just changes res and stays fullscreen.

Anyone have any clues why it refuses to go in a window? I'm on Vista 64-bit, and my video card's an ati radeon 5970 if that matters. Drivers are up to date as of yesterday.

Which resolution does your desktop use and which resolution did you try to set?
It should only work with game window resolution lower than desktop resolution. Yes, it is quite "captain obvious" advice, however overlooking something is quite normal.

Hey, captain obvious or not, you're still trying to help and I appreciate it.

I run 1920x1080 desktop res, which is why I'm trying to run it windowed since the game's max resolution is 1280x1024. Since the aspect ratio is also off, my game looks squished and it's bothering me.

I've tried unchecking fullscreen and setting the res lower, but it just sets the res lower and ignores me unchecking fullscreen, for whatever reason it seems unable to window entirely and I have no clue why.

I guess all I can think of is this, does anyone know if there's an .ini file anywhere? If not, does anyone know a command line I can add to a shortcut to tell the game to start windowed? Those're the only possible things I can personally think of for an attempted fix.

If someone find a solution, I would appreciate it.

You could use vitualbox, but it's not really a solution.
Try set your desktop to hicolor (16 bit)

Thanks, but it doesn't work.
This is even more annoying than I have a widescreen.
Hey All, I just downloaded HOMM4 and having the same issue. It just refuses to run in windowed mode. Option > uncheck 'Full Screen' does not work at all. Can the GOG Support advise on this?
Solution: try not windowing it at 1280x1024 but at the lower one, that worked for me, i think its 1024x768, but not sure, just click the second one. That should solve it, I think the 1280x1024 windowed needs some crazy resolution to window, definitely higher than 1920x1080. even at 1024x768 its pretty big on screen. For me though it seems to lag quite a bit, if someone solves that one, it'll be more useful for me.

My lag disappeared when I restarted the game.
and it runs better if you set compatibility mod win xp sp2 in 1024 x 768 windowed

i have the same issue, but the previous solutions don't work for me. unchecking the fullscreen button straight up doesn't do anything, independent of resolution. any help please?

Use the GL Wrappers mentioned in the pinned post.... official site is down, but you can find a working link if you follow the topic

https://www.gog.com/forum/heroes_of_might_and_magic_series/graphic_gl_wrapper_for_all_heroes_heroes_of_might_and_magic_1_2_3_4_and_chronicles_for_better_wo/post178

Just unpack the content of Heroes4GL_1.51.exe in the main game folder and you should be good to go... in windowed mode you should also have extra options for rendering and stuff in the top menu
