Could you please post your system specs and OS?
I have one idea but It will only work if you are running XP, try running your desktop on 16 bit colours. To do this just right click the desktop, go to properties. Then the settings tab and change Colour quality from 32bit to 16 bit. Remember to change this back when you want to play other games.
Ok i just did that and ill give it a try, ill post an update in a hour or so. Thanks

If your not back in an hour or so I'll assume it worked and you lost the entire day to the game ;)

Ok it was working great, it just did it again though. It seems to happen during my end turn where the cpu makes they're move, or at the start of my next turn.

Try running it under windows 95 compatiblity with admin rights ticked if on win7/vista. You can get to that by right clicking the shortcut of the game and going to properties and then the compatibility tab.
If that doesn't work could you post your system specs and the OS your on?
I had a problem like this on Vista but fixed it by using the actual heroes3 exe file to play the game instead of the gog modified version.
Also, I think there's a nice support topic about this somewhere when you go to the HOMM 3 page.
Setting heroes3.exe's affinity to one core only seems to have fixed random crashing for me. You can do this trough the task manager, just find heroes3.exe there and right click to set affinity. I don't know how to save it though.
(I'm running vista32 on a HP pavilion dv9000).
You can actually save core affinity settings using the games shortcut, by the target command line.
Heres a nice handy guide. The guy got the cpu numbers wrong though so to get the right ones scroll down to the first comment.
