Still trying to get two computers to play this game over a LAN, but it refuses to do so.

One machine uses Vista 64, the other uses Windows 7 64.

No matter which one I set as host, the computer that joins can't see the hosts maps.

if I try to talk in the chat window, I can see text coming from the Vista machine to the Windows 7 machine, but anything I type on the Windows 7 machine can't be seen by the Vista machine (and it doesn't matter who hosts for that one).

Tried:
Disabling firewalls
Installed GameRanger
Tried various compatibility modes

Still no dice.

Not sure what to do next. Kinda a wasted sale if I can't get it to work, since I purchased the game to play multilayer.

any help would be appreciated.
Make sure that you don't have a second firewall active on one of the machines (most likely vista one).
Sometimes if you use a firewall from an antivirus package, the windows firewall may still be active if it was not disabled properly by the antivirus installer. Also if you changed the antivirus+firewall solution the former one may not have been properly uninstalled and the old firewall may still be active. Multiple software firewalls are not recommended and most of the time the user is not aware of this situation.

Another thing to check is the order in which the available networks are accessed by each machine. On both machines, the first should be the network adapter that you use to connect to the other machine. See here how to set the order.
