Hi,

does the game work in LAN or Direct IP? I have two PCs, both with Win7 64-bit.

Thanks!
Classic LAN probably no, is it uses the forgotten IPX protocol (though Evolve, Hamachi etc. can probably emulate it), but direct IP is definitely a yes.

Well, direct IP can be used perfectly reasonably to play on LAN. You just need to know the internal IP of the host.
As a host on Windows:
-go to Windows' START menu
-search "cmd.exe" and launch it
-type "ipconfig" anc press ENTER
-your computer's internal IP should be among all the other addresses shown - you need to look for an IPv4 address and I think the address for LAN should start with "192", for example mine is "192.168.1.8".
-If you're connected in LAN with others, other players need to enter this IP in the "Direct connect" option and they should connect without problems.
Or you can use the actual direct TCP/IP connection method :P

I own the original HOMM3 from 3DO and HOMM3 complete from Ubisoft. Attempts to connect via TCP/IP across my home LAN didn't work. Does anyone know whether it SHOULD work, or are the different versions incompatible? I'm toying with buying the GOG.com version to see if running that in place of one of the other versions should help, but it could also be that some stray firewall setting somewhere is actually what's blocking the connection. Suggestions?

(Note: I'm most likely going to buy the GOG.com version regardless, because watching my boys play one of my favorite games has me itching to install and play it myself, but the question of whether the different versions should be able to connect still stands).
If your CD version is merely the Restoration of Erathia, they are not compatible. Heroes III Complete (version 4.0) is only compatible with Heroes III: The Shadow of Death (version 3.2, look for the patch here) in multiplayer. Restoration of Erathia is missing an entire town, some neutral units, and possibly some coding.
