I just bought HoMM3 complete on GOG (Of course). Whenever I try to run it, it simply plays a tune and then closes.

I use Windows 10 Home Edition.

Is there any reason for this? Do I really have to mod it to be able to play?

It should work even unmodded (provided you have activated the legacy DirectPlay from the Windows components), but as suggested the HD mod is so much better in every way, and so easy to install, that there is not really any reason to skip it and not enjoy maximum compatibility
