I've searched far and wide for a resolution to this on the forum but couldn't find anything that resolves my issue.

Currently when loading up any campaign as soon as the game loads. I will attempt to play, works fine if I avoid picking up items, but as soon as I do the game freezes and is unplayable. Music is still playing but none of the sprites move at all.

Tried using HeroesGL?

Yes. Nothing I've tried has worked so far. I've even cleaned installed twice and applied the same mod, nothing has worked.

Did you completely remove the game before re-installing? Did you try running the game without the mod to see if the mod was causing the problem? And if so, if it didn't work the first time, why did you try exactly the same thing a second time and expect a different result?

Perhaps there was something corrupted with the install that was causing this to happen. This used to work with no issues about 6 months ago. Today I started it up and it stopped working.

Go to task manager and check if soething hung the process.
Especially smething with overlays (and with hided onerlays\-injectors - like some audio, keyboards, mouse or gamepads additional software that is NOT a part of drivers, also Nvidia Experience application or MSI Afterburner).

If so, removing and reinstalling once should have been sufficient. However, I'm presuming you're running some version of Windows, so it might have been a Good Idea to run defrag after removing it. It's been a long time since I switched to Linux, where that's not needed, and it slipped my mind. In any event, if you haven't defragged recently, do so before trying the game again because it really can't hurt.

Needed to update OpenGL drivers. Interesting that the cut scene's and everything else worked but as soon as an item was picked up it would freeze.

Hi. Have you tried fheroes2 engine? Fheroes2 is a remake of the original HoMM2 engine, but runs flawlessly on modern OSes and brings dozens of QoL features (HD, instant battles, hotkeys etc.)?
