I have the same issue when launching the game with Roland sound is selected. I can get it to work with Sound Blaster 16 without any issues as well. You would think it would work with the general midi capabilities of my computer currently at least, but it doesn't. I've started going down the midi rabbit hole and just recently ordered a Roland SC-88. Hopefully I can get this game to work with it when it comes in eventually. So far I've been able to successfully configure other games for midi without much of an issue, but this one currently keeps giving me fits. I should point out that the other games I've configured have been redirected to Munt which is an MT-32 emulator, but the idea behind redirecting to a hardware based midi module is still the same.
