how come I pay to get a useless software

I actually had this problem too at some point. I installed the game and played it fine for a while, then let it be. Picked up a year later and upon start-up the game was suddenly asking for the CD. Now it again works as it should. I cannot think of anything else except an antivirus or execution control software maybe getting in the way somehow.

I would contact support.

1. Do not install the game in default 'Program Files' folder! Create separate folder for gaming (C:\GAMES\ for example) and subfolders for each game inside this folder (C:\GAMES\HEROES3\ for HoMM 3 for example) and install the game into this folder.
2. Always run the game as administrator! The game creates registry entries in HKLM and thus needs administrator previleges in order to run properly.
3. If nothing else helps try HD Mod.
