the freezes up and all i can do is restart the computer.
What operating system?
What exactly do you mean by freezing? When does it happen? Immediately when you start, or after playing?

This game has some performance issues. I solved them by using DXWnd
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

However, other things you could try:
_ Lower the game resolution (from the options menu). For me it ran completely fine on the lower ones (800x600). I used DXWnd only to play on maximum resolution.
_ Change your desktop colour depth to 16-bit.

Windows 10, freezing happens after I start playing.
ZFR's tip about lowering the game resolution is a good recommendation. Many people hit issues on 1280 x 1024, while lower resolutions run just fine.
And if all else fails, you could always contact Support.

I actually have this problem as well on windows 10. I get the problem only in combat. I have noticed in the game that I have to close all other applications for the game to run at the speed I am accustomed to, but the game will still freeze mid-combat and require a log out of my account in order to allow me to go back to my background screen.

Did you try any of the solutions I mentioned?

I play on the mid level resolution, and I haven't changed my computer to 16 bit color as it woul dbe too much of a pain to switch back and forth for everything else I do.

It seems very wierd that a color issue would cause a crash only in combat. The problem reeks of a memory leak, which is usually a coding error.

DXWnd isn't just a colour issue solution, it changes the renderer altogether. It helps stabilize quite a few old games.

Doe's anyone know how to set up teams in the heroes4 map editor? teams Of AI vs Ai or or Humans Vs Ai or even teams of humans and AI vs humans and Ai?
How do I get DXWND working with Heroes 4? I set it up according to instructions using heroes4.exe but that exe looks glitched even when I start it without dxwnd. Ordinarily the GOG program launches the game. But things freeze mid-combat.

There is a better way of fixing HoMM4 issues instead of DXWND. Use the wrapper from here:
