Just for fun, I started a medium-sized random map on 200% with three allied comps. There were some unguarded Gold piles and chests scattered about, although it took more than a few turns to grab them. Unfortunately, both the Sawmill and the Ore Pit were on the opposite side of the mountain range where my starting town was located. Since I was Rampart, that meant I couldn't afford a Homestead until Day 5 or 6. Furthermore, I couldn't build a Citadel until the following week. Seeing both Crag Hack and Clancy in my Tavern was honestly what made me give this map a try.
Due to the aforementioned issues and spending 5000 Gold on hiring heroes, I couldn't afford much of an army. Crag Hack had 14 Grand Elves and roughly 80 Centaurs during the second week, and that was partially due to finding two Centaur Stables in my starting area. Most annoyingly, however, there wasn't much to fight in the immediate vicinity. I fought several groups of Goblins and Hobgoblins, but those battles didn't yield much in the way of Gold or resources. There's a Unicorn Glade and Enchanted Spring nearby, but they're guarded by a horde of Wolf Raiders and lots of Pegasi (respectively). There's a long strip of rough terrain to the south, but most of it is guarded by tough monsters. Crag Hack managed to flag a few mines down there (including a Gold Mine guarded by lots of Wights), and he gained 3000 Gold from an Imp Cache. Beyond that, there wasn't much he could handle. Interestingly, the only way out of my starting "valley" is through a Subterranean Gate blocked by a horde of Medusas. Yeah, I'm not leaving anytime soon.
I'm one turn away from Month 2, and my Rampart town is finally looking more complete. I just built my Capitol, so my daily income is 5000 Gold. All of my base-level generators have been built except for Dragon Cliffs, which I hope to build in another week or two. Unfortunately, building my Capitol meant I couldn't recruit more creatures for Crag Hack. It's alarming how I don't have very many winnable battles to fight right now. And meanwhile, an enemy hero (Gunnar) just revealed himself to me over the mountains with an army of Rocs and Behemoths. I am anticipating an uphill struggle.
