I noticed on the HOMM 1 wikipedia entry that there was a windows release of the game including a random map generator. As my GoG copy is clearly running in dosbox, am I correct in assuming that the GoG release is the older DOS version missing this upgrade? I find it kinda weird that there's no forum posts on this question considering how picky most GoGers (like myself) are about having the best version of these games . . .

RMG first appeared in HoMM III. There are no RMG for HoMM/HoMM II. Windows release of HoMM contains map editor only.
H2 has a random map generator inside map editor. It was introduced with PoL expansion, though its quality is far from being satisfactory. For example, it can put a bunch of dragons next to your castle, so you won't be able to explore the rest of the area, as there is no chance you can beat them with your starting army.
Hmmm, well obviously I believe you guys are telling me the truth. Here's what Wikipedia has to say that led me to ask the question...

"In 1996, NWC released an updated version of the game, ported to Windows 95. This new version included a map editor, random map generator, CD audio, and new scenarios. As a bonus, King's Bounty was also included on the CD."

Is it possible that Wikipedia is lying to me, or does this Win95 version with a RMG + extra scenarios actually exist somewhere?
I can't remember any RMG for HoMM1. But why would you want one in the first place? HoMM 2 is superior to HoMM1 in every respect.

Admittedly, at this point I'm mainly just curious about whether this Win95 version of the game ever actually existed. I just finished the "campaign" and, speaking as a HOMM3 aficiando, I have to say the gameplay of HOMM1 is actually pretty decent. I'd probably play a random map now and then in HOMM1 if I could. Still surprised that no one seems to know whether that excerpt from Wikipedia has any truth to it.
As with Heroes II the RMG for Heroes I is found in the map editor. Run the Map Editor and click the RAND button on the lower right hand side of the screen.

Thanks, that answers my question about the RMG. Do you happen to know whether there was ever a win95 port?

Of Heroes I? Yes, I have a copy of the Windows version.

Interesting. I wonder why GoG isn't offering it? Especially if it comes with extra scenarios like the wiki claims...

GoG will not offer CD images with Redbook audio tracks (as well as copy protected images) which needs to be emulated via Daemon Tools in first possible drive letter for proper ingame audio playback. Want to play original release? Buy it elsewhere.
With the Windows version of HOMM2 just released hopefully we should get a Windows version of HOMM1 sometime too.
