A friend and I had been using Voobly to play Age of Empires: Rise of Rome, and Age of Mythology with each other for a while, and when we saw that they [seemingly] supported Heroes of Might and Magic 3, we decided to give that a go since Hammachi stopped working for us.

Well, the game launches just fine, but only one of us gets all the way inside. The host makes it to the New Game / Load Game screen, but the person joining the lobby gets stuck at the splash screen until they're given a message saying something to the effect of "There was an error trying to join this session, please try again." and then kicks them out.

My friend is using the Heroes 3 disc (With shadow of death installed), and I'm using the most recent version from gog.com.
Is it possible that the game versions are different, and that's preventing us from joining each other's games?

Actually I can tell you right off that NO it's not because you have different versions.

Heroes 3 is by far the best game to let you know if it's a case of version incompatibility because it will say it in the error message directly as well as letting you know which version you are both using.

It would say something like "Cannot connect, Your version #3.1 is not compatible with the hosts version of 4.0",

Sadly what is usually the problem connecting with H3 is Router and FWall/Port problems. These were what using Hamachi before got around as it set you both up on the same "LAN".

Routers were a big issue because each computer on the router had a different IP address that was different from the routers.
Hmm... Well, we both disabled our firewalls and restarted Voobly and launched the game again. No difference there - host could start the game but the other player would get kicked out because of some error.

As far as the routers go... We're not sure what to do there.
Thank you for taking the time to respond, by the way. It means a lot to both of us :)

Meant to post a link before so here it is. It is a link to the Heroes Community website thread on how setup a multiplayer game.

http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=12141

Also not to belittle gog at all but the HC has a lot more ppl dedicated to the HoMM series and I would have to say 95% of the people on there have played or even still play H3.
Thanks for the link.
It says something about it likely being a router problem, but... Well I can't go poking around on my router since it's a part of a business network. If it was something I could adjust on my own computer, great (The guide they gave didn't seem to be someting I could do on my own computer)

They also recommended Hamachi 1.0.1.5 . I downloaded the version they recommended and it simply won't install. It starts installing then tells me setup has failed and closes.

Someone else recommended a site called neorouter, but I've never heard of it =/
Neither of us wants to use GameRanger though.
