This whole series has always been impossibly difficult. I own them all thinking that it will click one day.... its been 30 fucking years and it still hasn't "clicked."

These games would be enjoyable if they weren't so goddamn impossible

What aspect of the game do you find difficult? Is your problem that the user interface or game mechanics are unacceptable? Do you find that the computer is beating you more than you think it should? Are you having problems with the prebuilt campaigns or are you playing skirmish?

HOMM players must be looking over their shoulders lol

But seriously one of the hurdles to get over as a new player is to be more risk-taking

You have to expand aggressively to get an advantage in HOMM games

Both against mines and their guards and against computer players

Ranged shooter guards are horrible

Other guards you can hopefully defeat in some way without incurring significant losses

Capturing enemy towns on Day 7 is also a big help

If you're struggling then check out www.gamefaqs.com or similar websites

Every experienced player has at some point I would imagine.

If it helps, I was having trouble understanding some of the mechanics of the game myself.

Attack ranged shooter guards with flyers.

Sometimes guards would rather jump aboard your bandwagon than go down fighting. So leave room in your attacking army. You can always pass them on to a second hero, or even disband them if they are creatures you really don't want (e.g. zombies).

Capturing enemy towns on Day 1 of the next week is even better, when playing against the computer, because you always go first, therefore can immediately claim the week's new recruits before the computer player has a chance to.
