I cannot connect computers for online play with a friend. Client cannot find host game, and Himachi does not work. I've tried the GOG version and the HD version. Nothing works. HELP!

Which part of the series? I assume it's HoM&M 3 because of "HD Version"..
First - try to turn off firewall / reduce guard level - this is common problem with online gaming.
I can recommend fanmade mod Horn of The Abyss - you can play through in-game lobby. If you don't want to install game enhancing mods try to play through GameRanger app, it works similar to Hamachi but better.
Last but not least - you two must play on the same game version, for example H3 Complete from here (GOG)..
