What am I supposed to do in the first mission? I make it to the ruins, loose most of my soldiers, my hero tells them to run. But i am still expected to protect 20 civilians, which is pretty much impossible. I have around 15 dead by the time i reach ruins.

[WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!!!!! ]

Just played through the first mission mission myself, and this is what I discovered to proceed. You don't need to necessarily make it all the way to the ruins to complete the mission. Work your way forward, slowly & easily, and as you progress, some fleeing soldiers will join you as you go (don't be afraid to use the "pause" key frequently to assess the situation) . When you are able to; sneak to some of the little glowing buildings and areas while your troops fight...you will be rewarded with potion(s)/weapon upgrades ect. (I wasn't able to get to all the little glowing areas for some reason due to the terrain). One thing to note, is to definitely go on the offensive when you see a group of undead attacking fleeing towns people, as you know, if 20 die, you fail the mission. When the towns people pass by you...retreat your troops and hero a little, and allow the undead to come to you (gives your Hero a chance to heal a little, and regroup). Keep working forward in this manner, sneaking your hero to glowing areas when posible to get rewards, and eventually as you work your way towards the town, you will hear your hero finally say that the numbers of the dead are too overwhelming, and now it is time for the remaining soldiers to retreat to the woods and save themsleves, as the hero will cover their retreat. This is your signal to start to back up to the original bridge you crossed at the beginning. Retreat steadily (and somewhat slowly..don't rush the retreat), kiting the enemy a bit (away from any retreating, remaining townsfolk), and stopping now and then to fire at them (and gain experience). Soon, you will get to the point where Ash the treeman asked for your help, and if you helped him, he will be waiting at the choke point to help slow the dead assault. Set in behind him, and allow the hero to fire away in support of Ash. Ash will eventually fall under the unending attack, and now is your time to head to that Watchtower near the bridge you crossed in the beginning of the mission. As you near the watchtower, the game takes over, and the hero enters the tower as the mob of dead hack away at the tower. Soon, rescue arrives as the Elven gal in the opening mission cut-scene arrives on Eagle(?) back to carry you away to the next mission...
*** btw, as you start your retreat, it is important to protect any fleeing towns people still heading towards the bridge behind you, especially if you are near the mission max of 20 dead, to prevent failing!

* To keep that civillian casualty number low by the time you near the ruins...follow my advice above...slow and steady...attack to save towns people then back up a little for a breather. Then proceed foward again...slowly. You should be able to keep civillian casualties fairly low in this manner, and your troop levels at a good number as well, to hold off the horde of dead...good luck!

Very nice write up and advice, but I'm having no luck with it either. No matter which way I approach it, I simply cannot get through the first mission. Very few people join me, and our damage is so low that fights take too long. If I rush... too many people die, and if I try to take my time... people die even before they have appeared on screen. A shame really since I like the game, but due to the absurd difficulty its impossible for me to be able to play it. Skirmish mode is nice, but the lack of AI in multiplayer is a bummer too. At least it was cheap so I didn't waste much cash. :(
Having the same damn problem. Keep losing the first mission due to the stupid citizens dying too quickly. What a horrible way to start a campaign. Those citizens are so freaking slow and stupid. They're practically as slow as the zombies chasing them. You'd think they'd be running out of there like bats out of hell.
Same issue here. I find it hard to believe there is no tutorial as a first mission, then how difficult the mission is as citizens die even before you see them.

Before coming here I have tried various approaches (i.e. moving my character to pick up items while the others fight), but I have not been able to get to the point of retreat. Too few people join and battles do consume too much time.

I like the game but to create a first mission that discourages people is, well, counter productive to people continuing to play the game. Who wants to waste 30-40 minutes only to fail to try again and waste 30-40 minutes only to fail, etc., etc., etc.?
I had forgotten how poor the first mission is. Anyone that happens to have a save in the beginning of mission 2 available?

If somebody still cannot pass first mission and still wanna try I am gonna give some little tips.

1. Most of skeletons have 2 / 20 hitpoints on normal difficulty and 3 / 20 hitpoints on hard. Also they have 10 piercing defense ( at least on normal difficulty) . Every hit you do can do minimum 1 damage ( even if enemy has much higher defense than your attack). So you should have at least 12 attack to destroy them swiftly in just one hit. Attack speed helps a lot too. I ignored defense promotions of hero completely and let my soldiers tank for me.

2. First skeleton team has 20/20 hitpoints so instead fighting them its better to just lure them to tower which can dispatch them very quickly. Second team of skeletons will come at you. I lured them to the tower too to save some time, but you can quite easily kill them with your hero + soldiers as they only few hit points.

3. I ignored goblins attacking alchemist completely. Killing them and then taking potions takes a lot of time. I ignored second loot place with goblins too. I rushed to the ent. I had quite a lot of soldiers so i sent them to help ent while my hero helped villagers killing skeletons. I ignored orcs too as killing them wastes a lot of time and they are strong enough to kill/wound many of yours soldiers. By now you should save after setting your soldiers at road nearby orcs and then you can wait killing incoming skeletons or push them going further. If you go further don't go close enough for towers to attack you. I think if enemy kills 10 villagers then mission switches to the next phase and then you have to retreat to the tower. If everything goes well you should finish mission. Good luck

You can also click on the soldiers that won't join you and press "S" to stop them, creating barriers along the way and they will fight when the enemy is near them.
