Is it just the Dark Souls system of multiplayer?

My spouse and I are not interested in pvp combat at all. Our biggest concern is we wont enjoy the game because other people will just keep coming in and killing us. This happened to us in Dark Souls 3, we never made it to Vort of the Boreal Valley.

I read one thing where it said you had to opt into "duels" but then the reviews say you just get invaded. Which one is correct?

**EDIT** I was gonna delete this post but it looks like I can't.

After searching around for a while, I found my answer on a Steam discussion, answered by a Dev. It would have been nice if it was clearly stated somewhere on the store page that pvp is through an invite only system but whatever. We both bought the game and are looking forward to it.

It would have been nice to see the answer the dev posted here as well; But I am wondering that, most likely you need gog galaxy.. I'm on linux so i dont even know how you get online with the linux version.. It would have been great if you could host your local server so that people on your network can atleast join in.

Im super disappointed in this myself, i just tried it offline and that doesn't seem to work that way. That is disappointing, if i wanted DRM garbage tied into a client i wouldn't of bought this. Thats so disappointing. They should of advertised this

Ah, yea, I was going to ask just this. And yes, I'm in the same boat. I bought dozens for games for the purpose to playing multiplayer to find out their is DRM tied to it (or their multiplayer is really 1 person keyboard other player controller crap)

Sorry being a bit late.

The game doesn't have any DRM. At least, I guess it depends how you define that.
We never check if the version of the game you're playing is valid or not, and never plan to do.

However, when playing online, we need to know who is who. Otherwise, kinda impossible to do matchmaking.
One way to do that, would have been to make people create an account/password when starting the game.
Considering the complexity of doing that, especially on all platform, we just went with using the ID provided by the platform as authentication.

On PlayStation, the console gives us a PS ID.
On Steam, it gives us the user Steam ID.
etc.
On GoG, it gives us a GalaxyID.

If you don't like launchers, you can always play local coop (splitscreen).

Look at the way factorio tackled Multiplayer authenticated, and unauthenticated (With out needing a central server to authenticate usernames). They used UUID for back end clients see, but the display name of what the user chooses at online is whats actually shown. Whether thats authenticated or not, depends on the host running a server, and whether that server authenticates with legitimate means to force dispaly name vs any name goes logic un authenticated.

All and all i get why you guys did it, but i cannot at all get MP working. The few times i did it was random, and fairly broken experience for me.
Even when I try to run the game through Galaxy there is no option to start a multiplayer game. Of course if online multiplayer works then it should be simple to make LAN multiplayer work. I am one of the few that must like to have LAN multiplayer since I won't have to worry about the "server" being available since it could one day go away. It is a shame as this looks like it would be a fun game. I am not hooking 2 keyboards to my desktop to play this with my son as he is a keyboard/mouse player as well. I do have this game. It just looks like it may go on a stack of games I don't play because something is broken.
