If you have an orientation sense as embarrassingly bad as mine, it could come in handy. Actually, I wasn't doing that bad: I was able to find all the lore runes, but I missed twice in a row the final turn to find the exit. The map helped me overcome this final step and finish the trial. As far as I noticed, there weren't any intermediate checkpoints during the labyrinth (I don't remember seeing the rotating icon until the very end), so having to start from the very beginning would have been very frustrating.
