It took me an hour to figure out this is what was making the screen so dark; is it supposed to do that or is my OS screwed up?

If it is supposed to do that, is there any point playing with it on? Since it is ON by default I don't want turning it off to be considered cheating.

I play with it off. That's not cheating and it looks better w/o it.
