I think I might have found a way to avoid the dreaded Sound System Error on Windows 7 64. But I don't know how useful it will be to people who bought it on GOG.com.
This game was designed to use DirectX 8.1, and that is on the original install disc. I installed that because I saw on another forum that it helped, and so far (2 hours continuous play) I have not had a crash. Before that I was lucky to get 20 minutes before it fell over.
Look for DirectX 8.1, it needs to be the NT version to install properly. I hope this helps. I'll post again in a few days when I've had more time to play the game.
