Problem: After launching the game, it started up for me ok and the splash screen audio and cut-scene audio played through my speakers no problem up to the game's menu where it just sat there while the entire time the screen was completely black from launch. I tried a variety of things and was completely unable to get the game to display any graphics at all. Could not find any solutions on GOG nor Steam forums nor via Google.

Solution: Disable multi-head. I have 4 displays hooked up to my video card, of which 2 or 3 are normally enabled and I've never encountered any problems with hundreds of games on GOG or Steam before the last few days while multi-head was active. I've heard of people having some issues with the odd game but I'd never encountered any problems with it myself until now. As soon as I disabled multi-head and launched the game, the graphics displayed fine and the game works. Enabling multi-head again causes it to go black again, and single-head restores it to working thus confirming it wasn't just a one-off fluke.

System details:
AMD FX8350, 32GB, AMD Radeon HD7850 2GB with 3 monitors and a TV attached in 4-way multihead
Windows 7 SP1 x64 fully updated with all security and critical bug fixes.
AMD video drivers updated to current as of today.

The problem occurred with any combination of multihead chosen, and went away every time single-head was configured. Oddly enough I had a different but similar issue with the 2 Commandos games which comprise the Commandos Ammo Pack which caused a "DIRECTX 5 NOT FOUND" error which completely went away simply by disabling multi-head.

Hundreds of games played on GOG, Steam, and Origin over time and never encountered this problem before although I know others occasionally do with some games from seeing other people's reports here and there. Still quite an oddity to encounter, but glad I figured out a fix for it myself as online searching yielded zero useful results.

I've reported the solution to GOG for potential inclusion in their official support database for this game, but thought it would be a good idea to report it here for others who might encounter this problem in the future as well.

Hope this helps someone down the line.
No need to disable my second monitor. I was able to fix this by setting the application's compatibility mode. I changed the settings for all users. Some of these may not be needed but I went with my go-to settings: run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, disable display scaling on high DPI settings, run this program as an administrator.

Thanks for reminding me that there are compatibility options. I had forgotten. Nice defaults too.
