Quit just goes back to the title screen, at which point esc doesn't do anything. so without having to use the task manager every time, is there a normal way to quit the game?
I justed used Alt F4, but there is likely a proper way.

Yes, this is what I had to do to quit to desktop when I played this PC port years ago.
I can close the game by simply hitting escape. Remember that this is a PS2 port, so it's used to getting turned off by killing the console.
I think you can close the game by pressing F12. It works for me at least.
I can also confirm that F12 exits the game, at least from the title screen.
F12 works as well as Alt+F4 but the intended exit key is Esc
since it doesn't work, does anyone know how progress can be saved?

Put your game to auto save in options, then when you exit to title screen the game auto saves. So just Alt+F4 after that. That's what I do and everything saves.

I use Windows 7 (resource-hog from Hell), hold alt and press esc.

Huh... Hitting the Esc worked for me... Weird how it works even if I'm in a match...

That just exits the match for me.
Looks like F12 does the trick
