and there's nothing seemingly wrong with pulse, cause other games play audio just fine.
other games such as binding of isaac and braid also make no sound

found the answer else where I had to build the alsa plugins from source

http://http.debian.net/debian/pool/main/a/alsa-plugins/alsa-plugins_1.0.28.orig.tar.bz2

then unpack it and ./configure make and make install

Seems like it might be the 32 bit alsa libraries. Installing the 32 bit pulseaudio libraries removes the 64 bit ones and breaks all audio for me on 16.04. At least one other person (I would post the link, but it seems I'm not allowed to) has fixed audio issues (with race the sun) by installing 32 bit alsa libraries (and speex).
