This is just a thing that seems really weird to me. In PS3 & Gold, Calaca has a variety of fire attacks. In STCE, he just seems to splash magenta lines at you. The effect looks pretty bad, like it's a placeholder or a glitch. I've attached two screenshots to illustrate this.

El Trio de la Muerte has a similar thing going on in its final form, but there's nothing else to compare it to.

I guess this isn't really a question so much as an invitation for insight and/or idle speculation.

I think they replaced every undodgeable attack with a purple-stylized variety animation, the same thing happened with those burrowing spike-plants, the huge hammer jaguar-skeleton, the four-armed skeleton's "whirl attack" and a few more. All the attacks you're not able to dodge are now displayed in purple, as some kind of visual warning. This happens since they first introduce you to that skeletal luchador with several arms, when you first encounter the Trio de la Muerte, as soon as you're leaving the Canal de Las Flores the first time.

Of all the artistic designs they went with in this version of the game, it's not even the one that bothers me the most; I particularly dislike how bones are now red instead of white. In some environments, it actually makes them harder to spot coming at you.
